Agenda Item 5

Nuclear and Radiation Safety

Statement by the Governor for India

Ambassador  Jaideep Mazumdar

Madam Chair

We associate with the Statement of the G-77 and China delivered by the distinguished Ambassador of the Philippines and would like to add a few additional remarks in our national capacity.

Madam Chair

Nuclear safety is critical to the future of nuclear energy and its various applications. India, therefore, appreciates the Agency’s continued programme for periodically revising the IAEA Safety Standards, taking cognizance of the current state of technology development, innovative designs and experience of the current range of nuclear reactors. We welcome the efforts of the Secretariat towards establishing the Coordination Group on Small and Medium Sized or Modular Reactors (SMRs) to enhance the coordination of the Agency’s activities on SMRs.

The safety of the nuclear installations is of paramount importance especially with increase in utilization of nuclear technology for peaceful applications. The Agency has been striving towards improvement of overall safety culture and management. The Agency has also been exerting efforts to assist member states either considering or planning the introduction of nuclear power or radiation technology, for establishing or strengthening their respective safety infrastructure, regulatory framework and competency in relevant areas. We commend such efforts. In this regard we welcome the additional member states that have become part of the different groups/conventions. In this respect we welcome the statement of the Distinguished Representative of Egypt. (announced that Egypt will accede to the Convention on Nuclear Safety).

Madam Chair

Radiation protection is becoming an increasingly important issue in the context of naturally occurring radioactive material (NORM), occupational exposure and medical exposure. The different national, regional and international meetings along with imPACT review missions  held in this regard will go a long way in implementing the radiation protection and safety of the occupational workers and patients undergoing treatment using nuclear medicine.

Madam Chair

India is pleased to contribute to the IAEA through its participation in various Committees. In the past, India has hosted several IAEA Workshops and Technical Meetings and has also offered the services of its experts under Technical Cooperation Programmes.

Madam Chair

We understand that the Board will revert to consideration of the recommended actions contained in document GOV /2020/35 in March 2021 – actions that my delegation is ready to endorse. -GC (64)/7*

I Thank you Madam Chair
