Draft Statement to be delivered at the IAEA Board of Governors Meeting (01-05 March 2021) during discussion on Agenda Item 6 – “Verification and Monitoring in the Islamic Republic  of Iran in the light of UNSC Resolution 2231” and Agenda Item 7 (e) “NPT Safeguards Agreement with the Islamic Republic of Iran”.

Madam Chair

  • In the interest of time, our statement covers both Agenda Item 6 – “Verification and Monitoring in the Islamic Republic of Iran in the light of UNSC Resolution 2231” and Agenda Item 7 (e) “NPT Safeguards Agreement with the Islamic Republic of Iran”.
  • We commend the Director General for his untiring efforts – both in reporting to this Board in a timely manner on the subject of verification, monitoring and safeguards with regard to Iran, as well as for his engagement with the authorities in Iran to arrive at a temporary bilateral technical understanding that enables the Agency to be able to continue to report on the subject for a further period of three months.
  • In light of the latest reports by the Agency, we urge Iran to continue to cooperate with the Agency. We commend the Director General for his statements of yesterday and today on the focused and systematic engagement planned with Iran on the outstanding safeguards questions.
  • India supports the full and effective implementation of the JCPOA and UNSC resolution 2231. The present situation of uncertainty in the verification and monitoring activities of the Agency is not desirable. India believes that all JCPOA related issues should be resolved peacefully through dialogue and diplomacy. It is important that respective obligations under the JCPOA should be adhered to.

Thank you.
